Here's what actually goes wrong at a wedding.

Let's face it, most couples make a playlist and hope for the best.

I get it. You have four hundred decisions to make and it's scrambling your brain. The music feels like the fun part, right? But if your finances are tight and you get a budget DJ (or maybe no DJ at all), what happens?

Your ceremony song might run out halfway down the aisle.

Your dinner ends and then… nothing. Because nobody knew what to do next.

And when it's time for your first dance, everybody just sort of stands there (there was no clear plan to announce it).

THIS DOESN'T HAVE TO HAPPEN.

I'll give you my whole system. Every moment, in order, with the songs and timing already sorted. All decided beforehand… not in some crisis moment, minutes before you walk down the aisle.

★★★★★

"Chuck was an exceptional MC. He kept the evening flowing seamlessly. Every announcement was clear, professional, and perfectly timed, allowing us to enjoy the night." -Courtney · WeddingWire

Don't let your night start on a whimper.

Right after dinner there's one moment that decides whether your dance floor stays packed all night, or sits empty. So many people forget it. Guess what? It isn't a song. It's 10 words that someone needs to say out loud… right before the party starts. Just ten words.

Get it right: Everyone is still dancing til closing time.
Get it wrong: Spend your night watching your friends sit down.

I'll give you the EXACT WORDS to say, along with sample scripts that cover every part of your reception.

Everybody plans the First Dance. It's the other 16 that get you.

Your wedding has 17 crucial moments, and I'm giving you two of them right now.

Number four. You said "I do" and now you're walking back up the aisle.

You just got married! Make sure your guests actually HEAR the song you chose to celebrate one of the happiest moments of your life.

Number seventeen. Your last song, the Farewell Dance.

It's the climax of your entire day. Is it a high-energy send off? Or is everyone simply gathering up their belongings and just… walking out?

That's two. There are 15 more… and guess what? Number fourteen is the one that decides whether anybody dances AT ALL.

My name is Chuck.

Chuck at the DJ booth with headphones, lit blue, working a reception.

I've DJ'd and MC'd over 2,500 weddings, from Barns in the country to Walt Disney World Fairytale Weddings. (It's not my first rodeo).

This will be the easiest $29 you spend on your wedding.

Don't take my word for it.

Anyone can post on Instagram or throw up a website and claim whatever they want, right? (I could sit here and type nice sentences about myself all day.)

I've won WeddingWire's Couples' Choice Awards and The Knot's Best of Weddings Hall of Fame. I have over 1,000 verified 5-star reviews, and you can see them yourself on independent third-party sites.

The best part? I'm actively working in the wedding industry RIGHT NOW. None of this is "theory." None of this is "hoping for the best." It's been proven across thousands of weddings.

With my system, here's what happens:

The night of your wedding, nobody comes to bother you. Nobody's tapping you on the shoulder halfway through dinner asking "What's next?" Because this system solves that problem before you start.

Every question someone could ask is already answered. Every song, every name, every cue, in the order it happens. Your dance floor fills after dinner instead of dying.

YOU'RE not managing any of it. You're at your wedding with no worries and happy vibes, having the night of your life.

You get your own online dashboard. Not a PDF.

Almost all wedding advice you can buy is a PDF or a printable. You download it, you fill it in, and then it just… sits there. It's a LOT of work. Sound familiar?

This one works FOR you.

Everything is built-in, waiting for you. Tap in your info once, and it automatically populates across your entire dashboard. It saves as you go. You get my exact prompts for Spotify's AI, and it will build customized playlists for you.

Once you enter your ceremony time, the automated timeline takes over and builds your entire day by the minute, all the way to your Farewell Dance. Type your budget in once, and then watch it magically split across every category. You can manually tweak and adjust timelines, dollar amounts, and even your vendor names, and see everything automatically change with it. (A PDF can't do any of that.)

Do you ever wonder why everyone says the timeline is SO important? Here's a great tool that will show you what ONE MINUTE of your Day is worth… and then you can decide if you want a 3-minute toast, or a 15-minute speech.

All 17 of the "big moments" get their own row, with my take on what works, and why.

Will this work for me if:

We already hired a DJ. You'll walk into your planning meeting knowing exactly what you want. You'll already understand the WHAT and the WHY of what plays when, instead of being asked questions you haven't thought about yet.

We're not having a DJ at all. YES! This is the exact reason the system was built.

Our wedding is small. Forty people, in a backyard. Forty people still hate standing around wondering what happens next. The list gets shorter, the plan doesn't change.

My friend is doing the music as a favor. YES again! Give them this and they'll stop guessing.

We're getting married in five weeks. Then forget the long-range stuff, it's already behind you. What matters now is the night itself: what plays, and who says what. That's one evening's work and you're done.

We're not in the USA. Nothing in here relies on being in a specific state or country. A grand entrance works everywhere!

It's a second wedding and we're skipping half of this. Built for exactly that. Check off what applies to you, and everything else drops off.

I hate every song you'd probably pick. Whether you go with the crowd-pleasers or something nobody's heard of, what matters is what plays when. Swap in anything you like!

I'm not very organized. YES, a third time! It saves as you go, fills in what it already knows, and drops the parts you're skipping. Nothing to go back and remember later.

Believe it or not, I'm not going to give you the hard sell.

Am I going to tell you this replaces hiring a DJ? No. It doesn't. If you can hire a good one, do it. Nobody's more in favor of that than me (I'd like to think I'm biased for a good reason, haha).

But a solid, experienced wedding DJ is going to cost $1000, $1500, $2000, or more. This is $29, one time.

It's your money and it's your day, and you'll figure out what's right for you.

Here's everything you get, the second you buy:

"DJ Chuck Johnson is the absolute best! He kept the dance floor going the whole night!" -Melissa · The Knot

Frequently Asked Questions.

Is it a download?

No. You get a link and a password to your own online dashboard. Nothing to install, nothing to keep track of, and it works on whatever you open it on. That's the main thing that makes it different from every other wedding download out there (yes, I hear the irony in that sentence).

How long do I have access?

As long as you need it… fill it in over a year if you want. You could do ten minutes tonight and come back months later and pick up where you left off.

How long does it take to fill in?

Less than you think! It's about an evening's work. And if you want to spread it out, you can pick it back up in a few days and everything is saved for you. (It saves as you type and automatically populates your dashboard). You never have to enter the same thing twice.

What if I don't like it?

Email me within 30 days and I'll refund you. No worries at all.

Do I need a DJ for my wedding, or can I just use Spotify?

Plenty of couples run their own reception music and it works fine. What you give up is somebody reading the room and reacting to it, and somebody on the microphone.

So if that's your plan, two things have to be settled well in advance: your song cues, and who says what and when. I'll give you both. You just need a trusted friend to hold the mic.

What order do wedding reception events go in?

Ceremony, then cocktail hour, then introductions of the wedding party and the couple. First dance. Toasts or a blessing, and then everybody eats. When dinner is winding down, parent dances and the cake. Then open dancing all the way to your last song.

That's the running order I use, and it adjusts to whatever you need. Here's the one people get wrong: the toasts. They belong just before dinner starts, because that's the only moment all night when you have EVERYBODY's attention. The rest of the placement, the who and the when and the where, I'll hand you.

How do I plan the music for my wedding reception?

Your wedding reception isn't one long playlist. It's 17 specific moments spread through the night. Lock those in first. Then you fill the long stretches around them, cocktail hour, dinner, and the dance party.

Out of a four-hour reception you get about two hours of dancing… that's about 30 songs. So if you've got a list of 200, somebody has to decide which ones are the must-plays. I'll show you where every one of them goes.

What songs do I need for a wedding, and when do they play?

The 17 specific moments aren't spread evenly. Four in the ceremony: the Prelude, the Processional (your wedding party), the Wedding March (your entrance), and the Recessional (the walk back up the aisle once you're married). Two long stretches for cocktail hour and dinner. Then 11 more through the reception, from your Grand Entrance to the Farewell Dance.

How do you get everyone on the dance floor at a wedding?

Most couples think it comes down to the music. It usually doesn't.

Every person is a little anxious about being the first one dancing, so keep the lights low. A room lit like a grocery store won't work. Then, YOU get on the dance floor and let loose, and guess what? Your guests are right there with you, every single time.

That's most of it… but it isn't the part that decides your night.

There's ONE moment, right after dinner, that decides whether your dance floor fills up or stays empty. It isn't a song and it isn't a playlist. It's a single sentence that somebody has to say, and I'll give you the exact words.

Who announces the first dance?

It's typically the DJ or the MC. If you hired a pro, they'll probably have their own way of running this part of the night. If you didn't (a friend, a family member, whoever ends up with it), they need a script and the right music cue so this doesn't turn into an awkward silence. Remember, "winging it" and "holding a microphone" do NOT go together.

Who should run the music if I don't have a DJ?

You need to assign that job! It doesn't have to be somebody musical, but it has to be somebody who'll stand up, pay attention, speak clearly, and follow the plan you built.

I'll give you every moment, every music cue, and the words that go with them, written down beforehand.

The awkward moments are almost never about the playlist. It's when someone disappears, doesn't know what to say, or doesn't follow the plan.

How long should the first dance be?

The first dance is almost always the full song, so your photographer and everybody else has time to capture the moment. Try to keep it under 4 minutes. Parent dances and special family dances are better under 2 minutes. You can fade one out early, and that's an "OK" solution… or use a properly edited short version so it still sounds finished. That's the BEST one.

What songs should you not play at a wedding?

There's no universal list, and anybody handing you specific titles is guessing at your personalities. Your must-play is somebody else's do-not-play.

There are a handful that empty a floor almost every time. The ex's song. Anything with a bad memory attached to it. Explicit lyrics with grandma two tables away. The deep cut nobody else knows.

So think about what a song does to your guests. Is it a classic banger everybody knows, or a niche TikTok trend that leaves people saying "What's that?"

I'll show you what empties a dance floor, and more importantly WHY.

How long should a wedding reception be?

Four hours for the reception is typical. Add anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes for your ceremony and about an hour for cocktails, and your day runs about 5.5 to 6 hours. If your ceremony is somewhere other than your reception, add the travel time on top of that.

How much of our budget should go to entertainment?

The big wedding sites put it between 5 and 10 percent, and they average out around 8. So 8 percent is the number I use.

I'll say the obvious thing out loud: I'm a DJ, so I'm the LAST person who should be telling you to spend more. I left it at 8 instead of nudging it up to argue my own case.

And if your entertainment budget is way under 8 percent, or there isn't one at all? Good. That's exactly who I built this for.

Do I need Spotify Premium?

For the Spotify AI feature, yes. I'll show you the exact prompts to use with it, and that feature needs Spotify Premium on the mobile app. It's still in beta, it's English only, and right now it's live in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Sweden and Australia. The great news? Everything else in the system runs whether you have Premium or not.

One word of caution though. I'd use Premium on the day of your wedding. Otherwise you risk a commercial coming through the speakers in the middle of your reception!

Can my partner see it too? Or our MC?

Yes. Same link, same password, on any device. And everything prints, so your key players can have a piece of paper instead of reading it off their phone.

"As a wedding planner, I LOVE this planning tool and highly recommend it! I've coordinated several weddings where the bride and groom didn't have a DJ… there were so many awkward silences because the music was messed up or their 'MC' wasn't sure what to do. If you're on a tight budget and using a friend to DJ for you, this is perfect!" -mybeelovedweddings
